Sankar Ghosh, Ph.D., Chair of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University, Elected to the National Academy of Medicine
October 17, 2022
The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced today that Sankar Ghosh, Ph.D., Chair and Silverstein and Hutt Family Professor of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University was elected a member at its annual meeting. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Dr. Ghosh was elected a member for being a pioneer in the purification and cloning of the members of the NF-kB family of transcription factors, key effectors of many physiological and pathological states. He elucidated the mechanisms by which NF-kB is regulated and established strategies for targeting it therapeutically for inflammatory diseases and cancer.
Dr. Ghosh joins 100 other distinguished new members of the Academy elected this year. New members are elected by current members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health.
Dr. Ghosh was previously elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in 2021, which makes him one of the few faculty members at Columbia University to hold dual Academy memberships. Membership to either of the Academies is considered one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a scientist. Two other dual Academy members, Drs. Riccardo Dalla-Favera and Stephen Goff, are also faculty in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, which Dr. Ghosh joined in 2008 as Chair, and has continued to lead since.
