Research in the Fidock lab focuses on the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. P. falciparum accounts for over two million deaths annually with the majority of these being children under the age of five. Current drugs are rapidly failing and there is an urgent need to design newer drugs that are effective at killing the parasite yet cheap to produce. Chloroquine was once the drug of choice for treating malaria infections but due to the spread of resistance to this drug it is now only used in a handful of countries.
The lab focuses on many aspects of parasite biology including delineating the molecular basis of drug resistance in P. falciparum, drug discovery research, digestive vacuole protein trafficking and the role of var genes in malaria pathogenesis.http://www.microbiology.columbia.edu/shapeimage_3_link_0
